LA TRAVIATA RICH WITH LOVE AND TRAGEDY
For Alfredo and Violetta, love is a temptation too strong.
Giuseppe Verdi’s rich drama of burning passion La traviata is on stage April 17-19 at 7:30 p.m. and April 20 at 2:00 p.m. at Phoenix Symphony Hall.
Passion turns to love when Alfredo tempts one of opera’s great heroines, the worldly Parisian courtesan Violetta. A love is born that endures scandal, sacrifice, and tragedy.
Violetta and Alfredo’s romance fuses with Verdi’s lavish orchestration (listen here) to create a heart wrenching, staggering musical experience.
Thaddeus Strassberger, acclaimed director of Arizona Opera’s The Magic Flute, returns to direct this production. Artistic Director Joel Revzen conducts.
Two gifted Canadian artists, sopranos Erin Wall and Alexandra Deshorties, make company debuts in the role of Violetta. Tenor Sean Pannikar, last seen in the 2006 Encore! Concert, and tenor Chad Shelton, last seen in Così fan tutte (2005), alternate the role of Alfredo. Stephen Powell, last seen with Arizona Opera in the title role of Sweeney Todd (2004), sings the role of Alfredo’s father, Germont.

OPERA BALL 2008 ON MAY 3
On Saturday, May 3, guests will glide over the Arizona Biltmore Resort’s red carpet to enter Opera Ball 2008 set in the Parisian world of courtesan Violetta Valery, heroine of Verdi’s La traviata.
Following a cocktail reception and Silent Auction, Soprano Lisette Oropesa and Baritone Charles Taylor will perform a short program. A four-course dinner will be served and attendees will dance the night away to the beloved sounds of Affinity.
Net proceeds will benefit Arizona Opera’s annual main stage performances and education and outreach programs.
