This weekend is the culmination of the Scottsdale Culinary Festival, that annual Bacchanal of foodie indulgence that reminds us Southwestern cuisine is as varied and thrilling as the region’s sunsets.
And in the spirit of this celebration of spirits (and food), here’s a look at three ways to sample some of the best cocktails and beers from dozens of the area’s most innovative restaurants and bars.
Thursday
On the Rocks at the Scottsdale Culinary Festival
Suede celebrates Absolut 100 by having Michael MacDonnell, master mixologist for Light Group Las Vegas (which runs the Bank at the Bellagio, for starters), make and explain a variety of martinis, all of which you get to enjoy. From 7 to 10 p.m., you can learn how to mix the perfect martini using the Swedish’s company’s new luxury spirit, all paired with a tasting menu.
Details: Tickets $40, 7333 E. Indian Plaza, Scottsdale.
Saturday
Off the Rocks at the Scottsdale Culinary Festival
Bubbles and Bliss hosts a champagne tasting from Chandon with passed chocolates and desserts at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. From 7 to 10 p.m., cocktail-attired guests can indulge in bubbly, and meet artist Ludvic Saleh, who has painted the official festival poster for the last two years. The sculptor and painter will sign posters, and his work will be hung throughout.
Details: Tickets $45, 7374 E. 2nd Street, Scottsdale.
Saturday and Sunday
Vodka, margaritas and beers at the Great Arizona Picnic
For the best in day drinking, check out the Great Arizona Picnic at the Scottsdale Mall, next to the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts. There, you can indulge at the Southwest Festival of Beers, the Absolut Bistro, featuring specialty Absolut vodka drinks, and the Patron-sponsored Garduno’s Margarita Village. Oh, and there’s food too, from Ahnala Mesquite Grill and Arizona Bread Company to Tanked Fish Sushi Bar and Victorian Cake Company. And there’s live music on both days. The party goes from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Details: Tickets $10, food tickets $1 each. Additional admission tickets required for some areas. Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts7380 E. 2nd St., Scottsdale. Tickets for all events at ScottsdaleCulinaryFestival.org.
